Frequently Asked Questions
General Travel Advisory Questions

What services does Meraki Travel Experiences provide?
Meraki Travel Experiences offers three core services: bespoke private travel planning for individuals and small groups traveling to Greece; curated Signature Experiences including sailing voyages in Greece, Croatia, and Italy; and Experiential Retreats led by internationally recognized professionals, including ceramics, culinary, wellness, and winery programs. All services are designed for discerning American travelers seeking immersive, culturally rooted experiences beyond standard tourism.

Who is Meraki Travel Experiences for?
Our clients are primarily American travelers who want a deeply personal, well-crafted experience in Greece rather than a packaged tour. They tend to be culturally curious, value quality over quantity, and want local knowledge they cannot find through a search engine. Many are traveling to Greece for the first time and want to get it right; others return regularly and are looking for experiences that go deeper.

What makes Meraki Travel Experiences different from other travel advisory services?
Catherine Keenan, our founder, has been a part-time resident of Athens since 2021 and has sailed Greek waters since 2010. She brings over 25 years of Fortune 500 project management experience to trip design, which means the logistics are as carefully considered as the experiences themselves. She is ASTA certified member and works with a trusted network of local Greek partners, guides, and artisans built through years of personal relationships, not sourced from a directory.

Do I need to know Greek to enjoy the trips or workshops?
No. All programs are conducted in English. Our local guides and partners are English-speaking, and Catherine handles all communication with Greek-language vendors and logistics providers on your behalf.
Booking and Payment
How do I book a trip or workshop?
The process begins with a conversation. Use the contact form on our website or email info@merakiexperiences.com directly. For private travel planning, Catherine will send a detailed planning questionnaire to understand your interests, travel style, and priorities before any itinerary work begins. Retreat and sailing bookings follow a specific registration process outlined on each program page.

Is a deposit required to secure my booking?
Yes. A deposit is required to confirm your place in a retreat, sailing voyage, or private itinerary. Deposit amounts and payment schedules vary by program and are provided in your booking agreement before any payment is due.

What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellation terms vary by program type. Private travel planning engagements, retreats, and sailing voyages each have their own policy, which is outlined in your client agreement prior to booking. We strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance, which we require for all retreat and sailing participants.
Do you require travel insurance?
Yes, for all retreat, workshop, and sailing clients. We recommend a policy that covers trip cancellation, medical evacuation, and interruption. Private travel planning clients are strongly encouraged to purchase insurance as well. We are happy to provide guidance on what to look for in a policy.

Workshops and Experiences
What types of retreats do you offer?
Our 2026 retreat portfolio includes: Clay and Culture in Greece, a ceramics retreat on Aegina led by ceramics instructor Kala Stein (sold out for 2026, waitlist available for 2027); The Chef's Palate, an eco-culinary retreat in Greece with six-time James Beard Award nominee Chef Evan Mallett (October 2026, registration opens May 1); a Boutique Winery Tour based in Athens (October 2026); and Yoga and Wellness and Jewelry Design retreats planned for fall 2026. Additional programs are in development for 2027.

Do I need prior experience to join a workshop or retreat?
No prior experience is required for most programs. The Clay and Culture ceramics retreat, for example, welcomes complete beginners as well as experienced practitioners. The Chef's Palate is designed for people who are deeply curious about food sourcing and culinary craft, not necessarily trained cooks. Specific requirements, if any, are noted on each program page.
How many participants are in each retreat?
Our retreats are intentionally small. Most programs accommodate 8 to 12 participants, ensuring a genuinely personal experience with the retreat leader and meaningful time with local artisans, farmers, and makers.
What is included in a retreat or workshop?
Inclusions vary by program but generally cover boutique accommodations, ground transportation within the program, most meals, all scheduled program activities, and Meraki's full logistical support before and during your trip. International flights are not included. Each program page details exactly what is and is not covered.
Sailing

What sailing programs do you offer in 2026?

We offer curated cabin-based sailing voyages on fully crewed 50 to 54 foot catamarans in three regions: the Greek Ionian Islands (September 2026), Croatia's Dalmatian Coast between Split and Dubrovnik (June, July, and September 2026), and Sardinia and Corsica (September 2026). Each voyage runs Saturday to Saturday with a dedicated captain and chef on board. Cabins are priced per cabin and accommodate one or two guests, making these accessible to solo travelers, couples, and travel companions.

Do I need sailing experience?

No. Our sailing voyages are fully crewed with a professional captain handling all navigation and seamanship. You arrive, enjoy the journey, and leave the rest to the crew.

Can I charter an entire yacht privately?
Yes. In addition to cabin-based bookings, we design fully custom private charters tailored to your group, itinerary, and pace. Contact us to discuss options.
Travel Logistics
Do you arrange international flights?
We focus on in-country logistics and do not book international flights. We can advise on routing, preferred Athens arrival airports, and timing relative to your program start date.

What kind of accommodations can I expect?
We select boutique properties with genuine character and strong local ties. Past and current programs have used properties including Ergon House Athens, Hotel Rastoni on Aegina, and curated island accommodations on Sifnos and in the Cyclades. We do not use large chain hotels.

Which Greek islands do you work with?
Our core island expertise covers Aegina, Sifnos, Milos, Paros, Naxos, and the Ionian Islands (Kefalonia, Ithaca, Lefkada, and Corfu). We also design Athens-centered itineraries incorporating the city's archaeological sites, contemporary food scene, and arts community. We are actively scouting new island destinations for 2027 programs.
Greece-Specific Questions
What is the best time of year to visit Greece?
For island travel and sailing, late May through June and September through early October offer the best combination of warm weather, calm seas, and manageable crowds. July and August are peak season with higher prices and heavier tourism, particularly on Santorini and Mykonos. Our retreats and sailing programs are deliberately scheduled in shoulder season for this reason. For Athens and cultural itineraries, spring and fall are ideal, though the city rewards visitors year-round.

Can you customize an itinerary based on my preferences?
Yes, and it is the core of what we do. Every private travel planning engagement begins with a detailed questionnaire covering your travel style, pace, interests, dining preferences, accommodation priorities, and any previous Greece experience. Catherine uses that foundation to build an itinerary that reflects how you actually travel, not a template adjusted at the margins.

Are the activities physically demanding?
It depends on the program. Sailing voyages involve boarding and moving around a catamaran, which requires reasonable mobility but no athletic ability. Ceramics and culinary retreats are low physical demand. Some Signature Experiences include hiking coastal paths or archaeological sites on uneven terrain. Every program page notes any specific physical requirements, and Catherine will flag anything relevant when you discuss your trip.

Will I have free time during the trip?
Yes, intentionally. Meraki itineraries are not scheduled hour by hour. We build in unstructured time on every program because some of the best experiences in Greece happen when you wander without a plan. The balance between structured and free time varies by program and is outlined in your detailed itinerary before departure.
Miscellaneous
What happens if my trip is affected by unexpected events such as bad weather or strikes?
We monitor conditions actively and work with our local Greek partners to adapt in real time. Greece's infrastructure strikes, while occasional, are predictable enough that experienced advisors can route around them. Weather-related changes on sailing voyages are handled by your captain, whose judgment on routing and scheduling is final for safety reasons. Travel insurance, which we require for all retreat and sailing clients, is your financial protection when circumstances require significant changes.
Do you offer group pricing?
We work with private groups and can discuss pricing structures for groups booking an entire retreat, private charter, or custom itinerary together. Contact Catherine directly at info@merakiexperiences.com to discuss your group's needs.
Can I gift a trip or workshop to someone?
Yes. Gift arrangements for retreats and sailing voyages are available. Contact us directly and we will handle the details, including how the recipient is notified and how their preferences are incorporated into the planning process.

What languages do guides and workshop leaders speak?
All Meraki programs are conducted in English. Our local Greek guides, partners, and workshop collaborators are English-speaking. Catherine handles all Greek-language logistics and vendor communication on your behalf.

Can I extend my trip or add activities after booking?
In most cases, yes. Extensions and add-ons are easier to arrange the earlier you raise them. For retreat and sailing programs with fixed group logistics, extensions are handled independently and Catherine can recommend accommodations and experiences for before or after your program dates. Contact us as soon as you know you want more time.
